A GMDH1 in the wild! PSPX 85, built as GMD demonstrator 800, is the third of only four twin-engined diesel-hydraulic <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=14230><b>GMDH1 units</b></a> built by GMD London in the late 50's. At this point the unit is having a bit of an identity crisis: it's still lettered ERCO for its old owner Electric Reduction Company, but is now lettered PSPX 85 (after Hamilton dealer S.G.Paikin acquired it), but has been sold to Limestone Quarries Ltd for use at their Uhthoff quarry (later becoming unit 3-6902). The unit <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=7089><b>changed hand a few more times</b></a> over the years before ending up in Alberta at Amoco Canada Petrolium<br><br><i>David H. No longer needed by original owner Stelco, SW900 unit 80 sits with SW8 77 at CN's Stuart St. Yard in Hamilton, both with lettering now crossed out after being sold to Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX) in the US. The SW1200RS in the background is <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=10971><b>Railink's ex-CN 1311</b></a>.

Freshly minted from London: GO Transit F59PH 521 sits outside the shop buildings at GMD's London, Ontario locomotive assembly plant in fresh paint. Part of an order of 16 units built in 1988 (GO 520-535) based on the freight GP59 with a separate HEP generator, a safety cab and full-body cowling, they would be followed by three more subsequent F59 orders that would take over GO's commuter service for nearly two decades.

CP Rail S2 6542 hustles a short local through the Toronto Terminals Railway trackage in downtown Toronto near Spadina Avenue, passing some of the downtown office buildings.<br><br>Judging by the NIFX flatcars with pedestals that were often used to move Toronto Transit equipment in that era, the unit might be taking empty cars from CN's Don Yard back to CP's Parkdale Yard, possibly for forwarding back to Thunder Bay. Notes suggest <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34662><b>TTC H4</b></a> subway cars 5576 and 5577 were the first two delivered to the TTC's Greenwood Yard on September 5th, so these could be empties coming back from that delivery. <br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

TTC CLRV 4000, one of three CLRV's painted painted in commemorative liveries during 1984 (5 cars total including two PCC's) loops around Fleet Loop by the old Queen's Wharf lighthouse, while operating on a 521 King-Exhibition route (via Bathurst & Fleet). TTC CLRV streetcar 4063, operating on the Route 505 Dundas, is seen diverting southbound on Church Street off Dundas at the direction of a police officer. A PCC on a 505 Church short-turn can be seen following. The large towering Sears Canada (formerly Simpsons-Sears) Merchandise Building/Catalogue Warehouse can be seen in the background, behind the Minit-Tune gas station. The long low building on the east side of Church is the old Simpsons-Sears garage (probably for delivery van and truck servicing).<br><br>The exact reason for the detour was not noted by Robert, but research shows that in that year (1981), the annual Santa Claus parade was held early on Sunday November 1st (instead of its usual time later in November) which probably necessitated the traffic detours.<br><br><i>Robert D. Operating on a fantrip, TTC Peter Witt streetcar 2884 makes a stop over at Bedford Loop, just off Bedford Road north of <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=56353><b>Bloor Street West</b></a>. Streetcar service at Bedford Loop (and on most of Bloor) would end a year and change later with the opening of the Bloor-Danforth Subway (a corner of the Bedford entrance of St. George Station, already built, is out of frame to the left).<br><br>There are other photos of the Victorian houses in the background with greek symbols, leading one to believe they may have been fraternity houses for the nearby University of Toronto at some point. By February 1966, they would be demolished for some low-rise commercial buildings (and in 2007, them and the nearby buildings along Bloor would be demolished for a new condo). Canadian National steam engines 8448 and 8352 head up a short cut of stored 0-8-0 steam switchers, their stacks capped and headlights covered, parked on one of the tracks at Spadina Roundhouse in downtown Toronto. They're no longer needed due to the abundance of diesel switchers teaming the shops tracks around Spadina, including little Alco/MLW S-series units, GMD SW1200RS, and even an MLW RSC-13 (in addition to the usual mainline passenger power).

Sources show CN 8448 as a P4d-class 0-8-0, built by the Grand Trunk Railway in June 1923, scrapped July 1959. 8352 was a P5f built by CLC in January 1929, and scrapped in February 1960.
<br><br>
Beyond CN's Spadina Roundhouse, one can see some of CP's John Street facilities downtown (including small coachyard, coach shops, and piggyback flatcars closest), the downtown postal building, and the Central Heating Plant tower. TTR's John Street interlocking tower is visible in the upper left, along with Union Station and its train shed.

This short steam train looks all to the world like an early Canadian Pacific Railway train crossing the prairies on the newly laid transcontinental railway in the 1880's...save for the modern Angus-built "action yellow" steel caboose on the tail end. <br><br> In reality, this is the train used for filming the CBC's The National Dream series on building the CPR, filmed in 1973. The star is Ontario Rail's former Canadian Pacific A2m 4-4-0 136 (borrowed for filming, and done up as 148). It's seen heading westward across the open prairie fields west of Gleichen, Alberta on the CP Brooks Sub. This may have been after filming the track laying scenes in Cassils were complete, and when 136 was reportedly dispatched under its own steam power westward to Penticton BC for filming the Myra Caynon footage. <br><br> Other equipment in the consist are wooden boxcar 500 (an old OCS work boxcar rebuilt by CP), flatcar 221 (converted from an old wooden boxcar in order to get a truss-rod flatcar), a former Intercolonial baggage car (from the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association, done up as a CP car), and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39675><b>wooden first-class coach 141</b></a> (rebuilt from an old OCS work passenger car previously on the DAR). TTC PCC 4476 (A7-class, CC&F 1949) heads eastbound on Bloor St. West at Spadina Avenue, operating on the Bloor streetcar route. A green utility van (Bell telephone?) passes by westbound, near the Toronto Dominion bank branch at the northwest corner. The Bloor streetcar had less than two years to go, as the under-construction Bloor-Danforth subway running parallel just to the north would replace the Bloor streetcars in February 1966.

While modern aluminum subway cars don't require all that much in terms of paint, the old 1950's steel Gloucester-built G1 subway car fleet needed a full coat and more.
<br><br>
Here, TTC G1 subway car 5097 sits inside the paint shop at Greenwood Yard, having recieved bodywork, window masking and some primer paint touch-up work. A fresh coat of <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43138><b>"subway red"</b></a> will soon follow, and all the proper TTC lettering and numbering.

Ontario Rail Association's ex-Canadian Pacific steam engines 136 (A2m-class 4-4-0) and 1057 (D10h-class 4-6-0) head westbound on the Galt Sub crossing the high Humber River bridge by Lambton Mills, originally built by the Credit Valley Railway in 1874 (since upgraded by CP, but some of the original CVR stonework can still be seen). They're travelling west on a fantrip excursion to Streetsville, and up the Orangeville and Owen Sound Subs. <br><br>"Credit Valley Railway" 1057 had been recently overhauled for operation at CP's John St. roundhouse in 1971, but had undergone additional work in 1973 (emerging fully overhauled on May 19th). "CPR 136" had been working out west on its movie stint for CBC's <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=55074><b>"The National Dream"</b></a> in May-June 1973, renumbered as "CPR 148" and was now back with the ORA (now 136 again, but still somewhat backdated with the old-style large tender numbers and other details. Apparently the CBC still needed to shoot the winter steam scenes with 136 for the production later in December, in the Havelock area). This was their first of many excursions together after 136's return and 1057's overhauls.<br><br>At the time, ORA had had acquired the two steamers, some heavyweight passenger cars (mostly ex-TH&B), and were expecting to acquire a piece of CN's Beeton Sub from Georgetown to Cheltenham for a start-up tourist line (but that apparently fell through). In the interim, they ran <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47318><b>many fantrips</b></a> in the Southern Ontario area. TTC PCC 4459 and a sister car operate in MU on the busy Bloor streetcar route (in the pre-Bloor-Danforth subway days), heading westbound on Bloor Street West past Bedford Road, passing the exit tracks of the TTC's Bedford Loop. In the background is the Texaco building (Texaco Canada Ltd headquarters), and across Bedford along the north side of Bloor are old Victorian-era houses converted into retail stores for Clare's Sportswear Shop, Steak N' Burger ("Steakhouse" sign) , a Harvey's, Superior Optical Co, and Swiss Chalet (the original and first Swiss Chalet location).

Bedford Loop originally opened in 1953 to handle short-turning streetcars along Bloor. Later when the St. George Subway Station (end station of the new University line) and bus terminal was being built next door, it wasn't incorporated, remaining as a separate loop. The streetcar tracks on the central part of Bloor and Danforth, including Bedford Loop, were abandoned and removed when the new crosstown Bloor-Danforth subway opened in February 1966, replacing the Bloor and Danforth streetcar routes (except short <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=31201><b>shuttles</b></a> that operated at both ends until the 1968 extensions opened). Today it has been decades since a streetcar passed by this spot, and a parkette and parking lot have replaced the old Bedford Loop by the subway station. All the old houses/stores in the background previously mentioned were knocked down for a high rise condo in the mid-2000's.

"Hudson's Bay Company - Incorporated 2nd May 1670" plaques outside the flagship downtown Toronto store proudly proclaim. Two TTC ALRV streetcars - 4216 loading eastbound and 4234 travelling westbound - pass outside "The Bay" on busy Queen Street near Yonge in the month leading up to Christmas. The storefront awnings are already decked out in faux pine tree leaves and red Christmas lights, and some of the Christmas displays in the storefront windows along Queen and Yonge were already up for passerbys to window-shop and admire. Even passing through the PATH system to get to the Eaton Centre (and Ryerson beyond), the photographer always passed through The Bay's lower floor section set up with the usual seasonal displays. If you're of an age, even a younger age, department stores and seasonal events were somewhat synonymous.<br><br>With the presence of HBC as as retailing giant in the Canadian retail landscape for literally centuries, it was hard to imagine it going away. But the online shopping trend, some questionable management, and a pandemic in the next decade seemed to have taken their toll. The Queen Street store (originally opened for Simpsons, who were later acquired by HBC) would be one of the few HBC locations to survive its bankruptcy liquidation in March 2025, but for how long is another matter. It all makes the 32-year ALRV era seem like just a blip in time compared to being Canada's oldest company, that once saw shoppers taking horse-drawn carriages and buggies into town to do their shopping (or snow sleds pulled by teams of huskies, if you were visiting a northern outpost to get some warm furs for the winter).
